Because of the change in sports times, many teams were forced to compromise their space and practice time. One of the many examples is the Middle School field hockey and football teams sharing the turf.
While there are many differences between this season and last, one thing universally missed are competitive games. “I miss playing games and real contact,” eighth-grade football player Deacon Prince said. Seventh-grade field hockey player Abbie Wildstein agreed. “The only thing I would change is to have games,” she said.
Both also share the opinion that while sharing space is not a current issue, it can become tiresome quickly. “Doesn’t bother me for now,” Deacon said, “but when we start really playing it’s going to be strange.” “Since we can’t do a full scrimmage it isn’t the same experience,” Abbie said.
Coaches have also been working hard to make practices socially distant while still effective. Middle school field hockey coach Meredith Crowther says she is planning by “trying to sprinkle in a little bit of the pieces of the game where it’s safe.” She also said the team is trying to do a bit of cardio and challenging drills each day to keep safe.
Even though the year is filled with differences and compromises, athletics has been working to stay fun and safe.
