The Middle School girls’ soccer team has taken measures to have safe practices with several new players and drills, making practices fun even during the pandemic.

During this time, the team has made great strides in improving skills and performance. “We definitely did some of the drills we did last year, but some of the games the team couldn’t play this year due to COVID,” eighth-grader Sara Feged said. Seventh-grader Lindsay Stepnowski agreed. “We have been doing drills where we have no body contact and we are staying six feet apart at all times.”

With no games the soccer lovers are disappointed. “Yeah I’m definitely disappointed,” Lindsay said. “Games are definitely fun but I’m just happy I get to play,” Sara agreed. “Even though I wouldn’t have been able to play, I still enjoy supporting and watching the new players and sixth graders develop during games.”

Meanwhile, Middle School English teacher and girls’ soccer coach Kyle Chapman is disappointed in not being able to play their nemesis school Har-Bur.

In terms of changing the practices, the players are eager to share. “We’re basically just doing drills without contact and focusing on touches six feet apart,” Sara said. Mr. Chapman agreed and went into further detail. “We are following all the rules that the athletic department has for us, keeping contact at minimum and keeping everyone apart socially distancing,” he said.

Although it’s tough trying to play a favorite sport during COVID-19, the players still have advice for new players. “Give it your all to every practice,” Sara said. “We know there are no games, but still give it your all and always try your best and try to have a good balance between focusing and having fun, and most importantly appreciate your coaches.”
