On Friday, Oct. 2, the annual student government elections were held. This year’s speeches were recorded virtually and watched by advisee groups during the advising period. Later that day, the Student Government Association (SGA) Faculty Advisor, Mela Fyre, sent out a Google form where each student could cast their vote.
On Sunday, Oct. 4, Ms. Frye sent out an email to the whole student body congratulating those who were elected in each form. In Form Three, freshman Ava Cashman was elected as president, and freshman Scott Taylor was elected as vice president. For the Form Three senator elections held during the next week, freshmen Ashley Buckingham and Maggie Poulin were elected.
Ava said she decided to run for the position of Form Three president because she enjoyed the experience of being a part of the student government in middle and elementary school. Another factor that motivated Ava to run for Form Three president was her desire to connect with the community. “[I want] to try and make our school the best it can be and to get to know my classmates better and help them,” Ava said.
In her campaign, she proposed ways to bring her form together as a community, such as volleyball tournaments or movie nights. “I think it’s more important than ever to focus on coming together as a community,” she said. “It’s important to get to know people and build new connections so that they can last throughout high school.”
In Form Four, sophomores Frank Pu and Keira Sullivan were elected as senators. Frank decided to run for the position of senator because he wanted to give back to the community that made him feel welcome when he came to KO last year. “People are nice to me, they are willing to talk to me, [and] they want to answer any questions, any concerns that I had,” Frank said. “So I feel like I should also do something for this community.”
Similar to Ava, Frank proposed ideas in his campaign such as volleyball tournaments that can help bring the form together and become more connected. Even though it’s a pandemic, Frank said that he wants to make sure that the students remain connected. “We are physically distancing, so it’s really important for us, even though we’re physically distancing, [that] we are not social distancing,” Frank said.
In Form Five, juniors Allie Wildstein, Olivia Reynolds, and Aidan Dillow were elected as senators. Allie decided to run for senator again this year because of her love and enthusiasm for involvement. “I just loved being involved and kind of relaying what I heard from my grade into the school,” Allie said.
In her campaign video, Allie talked about making their junior year as fun as possible despite the current situation with COVID-19 and the fact that they are in the hardest year of high school. “I think that a lot of kids just kind of want to have fun,” she said. “We need to remember that we are 16, 17 years old, and even with everything with COVID like there’s still room to have fun.”
In Form Six, seniors Izzy Burke, Hunter Meshanic, and Adam Paszczuk were elected as senators. Izzy decided to run for senator because she wanted to become involved in her community since this is her last year at KO. In her campaign, Izzy touched on various ways that she can help bring her form together for their last year in high school despite the ongoing pandemic.
Congratulations to all the new members of student government!
