Senior and Editor-in-Chief Cici Chagnon has been a member of the KO News staff for three years and has made many valuable contributions during her time as a staff member.
Her first role after taking the journalism class was as an associate arts editor. She then became the Head of News during her junior year and this past year, served as the Editor-in-Chief.
One of her favorite parts about being a member of the staff was the pre-COVID-19 Sunday news days, in which the entire staff would get together to work on the print issue of the newspaper, often accompanied by donuts and bagels.
Cici became the Editor in Chief during the lockdown period, so she had a different experience than previous editors-in-chief. “As editor-in-chief, it was kind of crazy because I had gotten the job in February, but we don’t have a March issue, so COVID hit over March break and everything, and so everyone was online,” she said. “I’m pretty sure I can say no one has had to do that before.”
One of her favorite articles that she has written was about 2019 Symposium author Sarah Ruhl. Additionally, although Cici has played a variety of different roles during her tenure on the KO News, she has enjoyed serving in all of her positions. “I liked all of my positions for different reasons,” she said. “Editor-in-Chief was very stressful, but it was really fun because I got to do the Wyvern’s Tale,” Cici said.
Her advice to any future writers on the News is to be flexible and to take risks. “During interviews, it’s easy to sit there with your list of questions and just run down them,” Cici said, “but don’t be afraid to ask follow-up questions or let people go on tangents because it’s that much more fun and you make connections with so many people.”
Cici has certainly played a major role in the newspaper in all of her positions throughout the years. We will all miss her greatly next year when she continues to write for her college’s newspaper.
