Senior Farewell: Keegan McMahon

The KO News scored big over the last two years while senior Keegan McMahon served as an associate editor and, this year, the Head Editor of sports.

Keegan was initially motivated to join the paper both because of the opportunity it provided her to express her passion for sports and to break a gender barrier on the paper. “Sports did not have any females in the department, so I wanted to make a difference and show other younger girls that they can write in any department they want to,” Keegan said. “It is exciting now because there are two other girls now in the sports department.”

As an associate editor, Keegan wrote two articles a month; in her later role as Head Editor of Sports, she continued steadily writing articles while also assigning articles to the six members of her department and editing their work. In both positions, Keegan proved to be an engaged, knowledgeable writer and a true leader.

Keegan advises up-and-coming KO journalists to avoid procrastinating and, above all, have fun with their assignments. “The newspaper is supposed to be fun and not a chore,” she said, “so make sure to add your own creative writing style to all your articles.” Indeed, Keegan’s favorite articles to write, which covered night games at KO during the last school year, were so enjoyable for her because she found herself truly excited by the topic.

The KO News hopes that Keegan “goes the distance” as she moves on from KO and thanks her for her years at the paper.
