Super Bowl LV: Buccaneers take the trophy, trounce Chiefs

If you are a huge football fan, I don’t have to tell you how intense and entertaining the Super Bowl is to watch. The Super Bowl is the annual championship game of the National Football League. The premise of the game is two exceptional football teams fight to be titled the best team of the season. Winning teams are awarded the Vince Lombardi Trophy, named after the eponymous coach who won the first two Super Bowls.

In Super Bowl LV, the American Football Conference was represented by the Kansas City Chiefs, and the National Football Conference was represented by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Both teams have trained their whole seasons to battle in this final game, which is why there is so much hype and emotion that erupts during the Super Bowl. The Chiefs were favored to win the Super Bowl by three points, but experts generally thought that it could have gone either way.

Before the Super Bowl, fans knew how fierce of a battle this would be with Tom Brady leading the Buccaneers and Patrick Mahomes leading the Chiefs. “The Bucs are going to win because Brady is the GOAT,” senior Ethan Raisner said. It is unbelievable that Tom Brady is 43 years old and is still making it to the Super Bowl, while the opposing quarterback Patrick Mahomes is only 25. This game was important for both quarterbacks as Brady would have his sixth ring and Mahomes would have his second.

Super Bowl LV took place on Feb. 7, 2021, at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Fla. It is surprising that the location of the Super Bowl happened to be the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ home stadium as it is the first time this has ever occurred. The Weekend performed the halftime show, and Eric Church and Jazmine Sullivan sang the national anthem.

The Chiefs won the coin toss and decided to give the Buccaneers the ball in the first half. At the end of the first quarter, the Buccaneers lead 7-3 with tight end Rob Gronkowski completing an eight-yard catch in the end zone. By halftime, Brady threw another touchdown to Gronkowski, a 17-yard catch, and a one-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Antonio Brown. The Chiefs were struggling to score and by halftime, they managed to kick another field goal resulting in a score of 21-6 Buccaneers.

At the end of the third quarter, the Buccaneers were still winning, leading 28-9. The Buccaneer’s defense appeared impenetrable, and their offense unstoppable, with running back Leonard Fournett rushing 27 yards into the endzone. The fourth quarter ended with a field goal scored by the Buccaneers, leaving the Buccaneers with a victory-winning Super Bowl LV score of 31-9.

Super Bowl LV ended up not being super close. The Buccaneers, although not favored to win, played a great game while the Chiefs were lacking on both sides of the field. “Overall I thought it was a pretty boring game with not much excitement,” Chris Sienko said. “The streaker was the best part.” As Sienko mentioned, there was a streaker during the game which was a highlight of the game.

This Super Bowl seemed very different from past years due to the pandemic. The number of fans that were able to attend the game was severely limited. “It would have been cool to have all the fans there for the first-ever home Super Bowl,” Ethan said. Super Bowl LV was still a great game of football to watch, and everyone can not wait to see which two teams will compete in Super Bowl LVI.
