The KO baseball team is riding high on a wave of success with a formidable winning record of 10-5, which speaks volumes about their dedication, skill, and overall team chemistry. They’ve shown that they’re a strong baseball team, and a force to be reckoned with on the field.
As the regular season comes to a close, the team stands on the brink of playoffs, having secured their hard-earned spot. Their qualification for the final four in the Founders League is not only an impressive feat, but a testament to their consistency and excellence. What’s even more remarkable is that this marks their third consecutive year doing so, making the KO team one of only two teams in the Founders’ League to achieve such an impressive streak.
Led by senior Co-captains catcher Nate Bowes and first baseman John Kumpa, the team played their last game before playoffs at home against Choate Rosemary Hall. Unfortunately, the close game ended in a narrow loss for the Wyverns, with a final score of 4-3. This defeat cost the team their home-field advantage for the first playoff game. On Saturday, May 18, the team stepped onto the playoff stage for their first game, a crucial one that would define their path through the remainder of playoffs.
The team’s strength lies in their unparalleled chemistry and unwavering confidence. Assistant Coach Ryan Radmanovich (Rad) highlighted the team mindset of approaching every game with the belief that they can emerge victorious, backed by their positive attitude and self-assurance. “We play together as a team; it’s a collective effort, and everyone wants to win,” senior outfielder Jack Decker said. Coach Rad stressed the importance of instilling a sense of success and productivity in each player’s mindset, allowing them to step onto the field without doubts but with confidence. “As a coach, my goal is to have them see themselves being successful with no doubts, producing productivity in games,” he said. The team’s success is not just about talent, although they certainly have plenty of it. It’s also about the right mix of personalities that make every practice and game enjoyable for both the players and the coaching staff. With nine seniors leading the pack, their cohesive personalities contribute to a winning environment. Despite grappling with some illnesses throughout the spring season, the team has been exceptionally fortunate to steer clear of any major injuries, staying physically healthy all spring.
During the second week of spring break, the team headed down to Florida for a team training trip. “We really try to build team camaraderie and chemistry, and that all starts in Florida,” Coach Rad said. “Even though we’re working on our baseball skills and getting ready for the season, it’s also a great time to build that chemistry.” He went on to proudly express his belief that this team possesses the most remarkable chemistry he’s witnessed in the 11 years he has been at KO. During their time in Florida, the team played six games with impressive results. Emerging victorious in every game, the team kicked off the season in a thrilling and fantastic way. Junior first baseman Tommy Caporaso elaborated on the many activities the team engaged in during their time in Florida. “The captains really brought the team together by doing team activities like hanging out in the hotel, eating dinner together, trips on the highway in vans, and hanging out by the pools,” he said.
Coach Rad pointed out the pivotal role of pitching, mentioning senior pitchers Adam Merrit and Sean Habib, as well as junior pitcher Harry Engle and the bullpen for their significant contributions in giving the team a competitive edge. Additionally, players like Bowes and Kumpa have stood out offensively, consistently delivering strong performances to drive the team towards their individual goal of winning the championships.
In a close-contested playoff game against Choate Rosemary Hall, the Wyverns fought fiercely to continue their journey in playoffs. Locked, in a tight battle for most of the game, they ultimately fell short, losing 5-3. This loss ended their season and a chance to claim the Founders League Championship. Despite the setback, the team should hold their heads high and reflect on their remarkable season.
