CandyGrams: A sweet tradition

As Valentine’s Day approaches, Kingswood Oxford comes alive with the excitement of CandyGrams.

This tradition allows students to send small goodie bags and heartfelt notes to friends and romantic interests for the low price of a dollar. CandyGrams at KO always seem to put the student body in a good mood, from the silliness behind the simple act to the joy individuals get from the candy. I hope it is a tradition we will continue to participate in throughout the years.

One of the best aspects of CandyGrams is the excitement they bring to both those who give and receive the little sweet treats. “It [CandyGrams] was quite nostalgic to how we would celebrate Valentine’s Day in elementary school,” junior Sofia Atanasio-Vill said. Valentine’s Day as a kid was one of the best days of the year. Students would get many sweet treats and small toys, which made everyone’s day much better. Sending a CandyGram is a simple way of brightening someone’s day. Whether it’s a funny message between friends or a heartfelt note to a crush, these gestures always bring a smile to people’s faces.

Sofia reflected on what the day meant to her. “It really bonds the community together and it was great to see everyone participating in the dress code colors,” she said. “I think the CandyGrams were a great idea as they were a special treat. Overall, I think it’s a great idea and KO should continue to offer these special treats every Valentine’s Day!”

CandyGrams also contribute to a stronger sense of KO spirit. The fun tradition encourages students to celebrate friendships and kindness. It also reinforces the importance of building connections and appreciation. “I think the student government puts in a lot of work to do these fun things throughout the year,” senior Julia Sohn said. SGA has been a contributing factor to keeping the KO spirit alive and thriving. CandyGrams are only one of the many activities they organize at our school. Furthermore, KO uses CandyGrams as fundraisers for the school fund, which is then distributed for other school events. This means that every purchase, along with sending someone a nice treat, also contributes to school initiatives. It is a great way to help the KO community financially and emotionally.

Another wonderful aspect of CandyGrams is its ability to encourage kindness and appreciation. Though usually associated with romantic gestures, many Wyverns use CandyGrams as an opportunity to show their appreciation to a friend or classmate they appreciate. This ensures that Valentine’s Day at KO is about more than just romance. It also becomes a celebration of friendship and community.

CandyGrams are more than just a Valentine’s Day tradition at KO. They are also a way of expressing appreciation, friendship, and school spirit. They provide students with an opportunity to brighten someone’s day and contribute to the school environment. As Wyverns, we all love candy, and the anticipation of giving and receiving a CandyGram makes Valentine’s Day much sweeter.
