The KO girls field hockey team, led by Head Coach Chapin Yates, has had a strong but challenging start to the season with a record of 2-2. The Wyverns look to build on their early-season successes.
The team started the season strong, winning the first two games. One game in particular made Coach Yates extremely optimistic about the start of the year. “The one that stands out is our win against Hopkins, 6-0,” Coach Yates said. “Seeing the team come together, stay focused, and goals scored by many different players was a proud moment for me as a coach.”
The team is led by senior midfielder Captain Kate Dempsey Weiner, who loves the role and takes the responsibility with honor and pride. “I absolutely love being captain, and I couldn’t ask for a better group to do it with,” she said. “I feel like a teammate, big sister, and mentor all at the same time. I like to think I set the tone for the team. I always feel the need to put my absolute best forward and set a good example for the girls. I want to be someone they look up to.”
One of the team’s strengths is how well they get along and the chemistry they have on the field. “I think our team camaraderie is some of the best it has ever been,” Dempsey-Weiner said. “We all genuinely care about one another and push each other to be better. We are all super close, and this year we have really emphasized building a strong bond on and off the field.”
The Wyverns have been putting in hard work to prepare for games, and they have felt confident heading into each game. “Practices have been competitive and focused,” Coach Yates said. “We’ve been working hard on fundamentals and situational play to make sure we’re prepared for anything during games. Our preparation includes emphasizing communication and fine-tuning both our offensive and defensive strategies.”
The team is looking forward to what they will become, as they have a lot of potential to do great things. “I’m looking forward to seeing how much this team can grow—both individually and collectively,” Coach Yates said. “We have a lot of potential, and I’m excited to watch the players continue to develop their skills and leadership, especially as we head into the heart of our schedule.”
The team’s next matchup is against Loomis Chaffee School on Wednesday, Sept. 24, and then against Miss Porter’s School on Monday, Sept. 29. The Wyverns are looking to continue improving and would appreciate your support at every game.
