Coming off a successful 2024-2025 season with a 12-8 record, the girls’ varsity basketball team is looking for another strong season.
The team, led by three senior captains, Olivia Pilecki, Samaria Gonzalez, and Katie Reale, is confident in the upcoming season. “With this being my last year as a senior and our team having a lot of returners,” Pilecki said, “myself and the rest of the team have high expectations for this season. First off, we want to win the KITs and then earn ourselves a spot in the playoffs and even potentially at home.”
Reale has high hopes, too. “I am expecting a great season this year from the basketball team,” Reale said. “I feel like we have significantly improved from last year. Our team this year is led by the three senior captains, who have set the tone for the season.”
The team’s captains are holding themselves accountable and hope to be an influence on and off the court. “After being a captain last year, I really got to see how much of an impact I could have on my team,” Pilecki said. “Everything I do on and off the court, someone is always going to be watching. And if I begin to slack off or make poor decisions, it’s going to affect the rest of the team. So I just try my best to be the best version of myself every day, knowing how much I looked up to my captains as an underclassman, hoping to do the same for them.”
With the season just getting underway, the girls have been putting in a lot of hard work in practice, working to build everyone’s confidence by replicating game-like scenarios.
The team just finished its first game on Wednesday, Dec. 3, with a tough 43-40 loss to Taft. Their upcoming games are at home against Williston Northampton School, followed by two road games against Cheshire Academy and Portsmouth Abbey.
With the first game so close, it shows that the Wyverns will be very competitive this year and have a lot of success. The coaches are pushing the girls and making sure they are improving in every aspect of the game as the season progresses.
Everyone should go and support when they get a chance, as the Wyverns would really appreciate it. The first game of the KITs is on December 19th, and we hope to see the KO community there!
