Seda’s Rankings: The KO Buildings’ Temperatures

Hot? Cold? Pants? Shorts? Skirt? Every morning before school, the average Kingswood Oxford student and faculty member picks out their outfit for the day. They take into consideration the dress code, along with the weather. Unfortunately, thinking about what classes they have that day needs to be taken into consideration as well. The unpredictable bipolar temperatures throughout campus can be unbearable, as nobody ever knows what to expect.

LAST

My opinion? Roberts is the worst. In the fall and spring, sitting in class is practically sitting in Antarctica while dressed for the 80º temperatures of the Connecticut air. Teeth chattering and mountainous goosebumps make it almost impossible to actually pay attention to what the teachers are saying, which is unfortunate, considering braving those temperatures isn’t exactly an option because everyone needs education. By mid-September, one starts bringing an extra layer to class, thinking the system is finally beaten. NOPE!

The first day of October will be absolutely miserable for those thinking they’re at school during the fall. Roberts has somehow been transferred to mid-summer Arizona during a heat wave. Perfect conditions for wrestlers trying to cut; however, the school doesn’t have a wrestling team. The students will begin to question the importance of their education, and the faculty will question the choices that led them to teaching. Another added bonus: the windows don’t work properly, so trying to cool down the classroom doesn’t work when needed. Overall, Roberts is one unpredictable cup of boiling water inside a snowstorm in Buffalo, N.Y.

FOURTH

Seaverns. Seaverns, Seaverns, Seaverns. The majority of the days, Seaverns has a good 68-72-degree average. A nice, calm atmosphere where one can prioritize learning, as that is why school exists. Unfortunately, there are a few unlucky days when freezing to death may occur. Luckily, our incredible English department has a few blankets floating around, so they don’t end up teaching corpses. Just like the cold days, there are the overly hot days as well. Thankfully, they’re infrequent, and the Seaverns windows work! (Take notes, Roberts). The worst case scenario is the super hot day in a tight, gray shirt because then everyone sees the sweat. Seaverns is often a lovely place to be, but the occasional days when the air conditioning or heat wakes up on the wrong side of the bed can really throw everyone off.

THIRD

The House honestly isn’t that bad, considering how ancient the building is. September and May are the main months when one might question whether they’re in the Rocky Mountains or at school. A nice parka to pair with a skirt and T-shirt is something everyone should carry throughout the year, even in September and May, because the buildings like to make sure everyone’s awake. Aside from those two chilly months, KO has the luxury of seven whole months with tolerable temperatures in one of the oldest buildings on campus, which is a lovely quality. Teachers should say they’re lucky to teach in the House.

SECOND

The temperature in CT is so normal that the building ended up being forgotten about. It’s the only building where there aren’t intense blasts of AC while test-taking, or heat waves while writing essays. When thinking about temperature, CT is the most unproblematic. The only time anyone is caught sweating in CT is after climbing to the second floor from the bottom because those stairs are notoriously rough. Sitting through class is the most tolerable in this building, as the temperature actually stays at room temperature, which the other buildings don’t really understand how to do. CT might not be the newest building on campus, but when it comes to basic human comfort throughout the day, CT has everyone’s back.

FIRST

Luckily for KO and its donors, the air conditioning and heat seem to work great in the Community Commons. It sure isn’t a shock, though, as the sign of the expensive renovation remains in the parking circle outside of Roberts. For over 20 million, I, for one, am immensely overjoyed that air conditioning and heat were in the budget because Commons is my new favorite place to go during free periods. It’s just unfortunate that the best building temperature-wise isn’t one where classes are held.
