The Community Commons was filled with music, food, and conversation on Friday, Sep. 25, as students, faculty, and families gathered for the Festival del Guiverno during Hispanic Heritage Month.
The celebration brought together members of the school community to recognize the different Hispanic cultures represented on campus. Throughout the event, attendees could try different foods, play games, listen to music, and spend time with friends and family.
Food was one of the main parts of the celebrations. Tables around the cafeteria featured dishes representing different Hispanic countries and cultures. Several local restaurants also contributed food to the event, adding to the variety of dishes available for attendees.
For junior Camilla Jordan, the variety of activities was one of the parts that made the festival enjoyable. She said the event offered something for different members of the community, from the food to the music, and the opportunity to spend time together. “The festival was so much fun because there was something for everyone,” CJ said. “There was tons of food, music, and so many people coming together.” Her experience reflects how the festival was designed not only around celebrating Hispanic culture, but also around creating a space where the broader school community could participate.
The Commons was also decorated for the occasion, with Hispanic flags displayed around the space. Games and dances gave students another way to participate in the celebration, while music played throughout the event.
The combination of food, music, and activities created an informal setting where students and faculty could interact outside of their normal classes and activities.
For students, the festival was also an opportunity to see their cultures represented within the school. The event brought people with different backgrounds together while giving students a chance to share traditions with their classmates.
CJ also noticed the way the festival brought people together beyond just the student body. “I loved seeing how the festival brought so many families and people together,” CJ said. “It felt like everyone was there to have a good time and celebrate together.”
Families and faculty members also attended the celebration, making the festival a broader community event rather than one limited to students. The gathering gave attendees an opportunity to experience different foods and traditions while spending time with other members of the school community.
Festival del Guiverno continued the school’s celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month by bringing cultural traditions into a shared space. Through food, music, games, and community, the event gave students and faculty an opportunity to celebrate the diversity of the school.
