The football team is off to a strong start this season, with multiple players stepping into bigger roles and the team setting a high standard for the rest of the year.
The team’s week 2 matchup was canceled due to the storm, but has an undefeated record so far. In week one, the team dominated Hamden Hall 49-6, winning by a large margin. Junior linebacker and wide receiver Landon Thomas had an impressive performance, recording 10, a forced fumble, a pick-six, and touchdowns at tight end and wide receiver. His performance earned him NEPSAC Player of the Week recognition. Junior captain offensive lineman and defensive end Ernesto Ballesteros said Thomas has really stepped up after the team lost several linebackers from last season. Ballesteros also described the game as a team effort, saying Hamden Hall did not have much success holding onto the ball or attacking his side of the field.
In practice, the team has focused on keeping the intensity high and preparing as if every practice were a game. “The team has been staying dialed and keeping our practices intense and game-like,” Thomas said. The team has also been working on developing depth by giving new players opportunities to get on the field and learn their roles. Junior center Teddy Ristaino said one of the team’s biggest strengths has been setting a standard and consistently playing at that level. Ballesteros has also stepped up as a leader, helping ensure the team continues to meet its expectations. Thomas has taken on a bigger role this season, starting on both sides of the ball for the first time, which has helped him earn recognition across the NEPSAC conference.
The team’s main goal for the rest of the season is to continue playing at a high level and compete for a New England bowl game. “The team is especially motivated because it has fallen short in the Bowl Game over the past two seasons,” Ballesteros said. “Many players who have been with the team since their freshman year believe this is the year they can finally win it.” Thomas added that the players know that they are capable of big things. “All gas, no brakes,” Thomas said, describing the team’s mindset. With the season still in early stages, fans can look forward to the team’s upcoming games and the chances to see young players take on bigger roles. “Fans should expect high-level football from a team that includes multiple future high-major Division I football players and a strong coaching staff,” Thomas said. Ristaino echoed Thomas. “Everyone knows when we play to our standard we are a very good football team,” he said.
The team had an exciting home game against Middlesex School winning 20-3 and is looking forward to an away game against Worcester Academy on Oct. 9.
