Grandparents and grandfriends visit KO for the day

On Friday, Oct. 16, students hosted their grandparents and grandfriends for a special day with an assembly, a class, and lunch, giving visitors an opportunity to experience the KO community firsthand.

The day began with an assembly where grandparents and grandfriends were able to hear about what was happening in the KO community. The assembly also featured speeches prepared by students, who shared what having their grandparents and grandfriends visit KO meant to them. The speeches highlighted the importance of having family members support students on their journey through KO and beyond.

After the assembly, students brought their grandparents and grandfriends to classes with them.

In English teacher Cameron Biondi’s class, visitors got to join a discussion about Symposium author Rebecca Makkai’s “I Have Some Questions For You,” while in science teacher Alexa Tzanova’s AP Environmental science class, visitors had the opportunity to work on a lab alongside students. In math teacher Alexander Hoerman’s calculus class, grandparents and grandfriends worked through math problems with students.

Senior Kamea Davis shared her thoughts on the day. “I enjoyed getting to show my grandfriend what I am learning in class and showing her what I do day to day at school,” Kamea said.

In history teacher Maddison Curtis’ class, visitors learned about the Boston Massacre. “Students and grandparents were given a crime scene, eyewitness accounts, and images,” she said, “in order to decide whether the British actions were murder or self defense.” This gave visitors a chance to experience the activities teachers work hard to put together for students everyday.

Through these classroom visits, grandparents and grandfriends were able to see the variety of subjects students study and the different ways they learn throughout the school day.

After classes, students and their guests gathered for lunch, providing another opportunity to spend time together while also enjoying a delicious meal.

Grandparents and Grandfriends Day is one of the most special days of the year because it gives visitors a chance to see students’ daily lives at KO. From the assembly to the classroom visits and lunch, the day allowed students to share an important part of their lives with the people who care about them.

It also gave grandparents and grandfriends a better understanding of the academic experiences and community that shape the students’ time at KO. Thank you to everyone who helped put this event together, and thank you to all the grandparents and grandfriends who visited KO!
