The Kingswood Oxford community is thrilled to welcome new Upper School English teacher Mathew Golchin to campus. This will be Mr. Golchin’s 13th year teaching in the Connecticut area, and he is coming to KO from Tunxis Community College, where he taught for two years.
Mr. Golchin grew up in Western New York and played football and rugby in college. He loves to fish, ski, and do landscaping in his yard. “I just spent a lot of money on my landscaping,” Mr. Golchin said, “and my favorite thing to do at the end of the day is to come home, set up my sprinklers, and stare at them!”
Mr. Golchin is looking forward to potentially advising a fishing club this year and is excited to serve as the JV boys basketball and JV baseball coach. Additionally, Mr. Golchin is eager to take advantage of KO’s Harkness Method, as he recognizes that it empowers the student to facilitate discussion in class. He also admires how dedicated and close the faculty are and explains how they are all focused on becoming better teachers.
Mr. Golchin looks forward to helping his students grow this year. “The students seem invested in the community, and they want to get involved, and people generally seem very happy,” he said. Mr. Golchin has clearly noticed how KO students are grateful to be on campus.
He is looking forward to experimenting with certain assignments and having some freedom to help students learn to the best of their ability. “I’m excited about trying new things in order to reach students and make school fun and engaging.”
Make sure you give Mr. Golchin a wave if you see him around campus, and if you are lucky, you may get to see him walk on his hands!
