Felix’s artistic journey

Arts

Senior Felix Fei is a fast learning, creative artist. Having begun his work in KO’s arts department in his sophomore year, Felix has grown as an artist and has begun to focus on digital art in particular.

Despite the great success Felix has found, he wasn’t always a confident creator. “I didn’t consider myself a very good artist to start with,” he said, “but my friends and the artist community I was a part of kept me going.”

At KO, Felix has taken both Intro to Studio Art and Advanced Studio, both of which were taught by creative arts teacher Katie Burnett. “Ms. Burnett has helped me find many different ways to look at my art and improve it,” Felix said. “She hasn’t done a lot of work with digital art, but she helps a lot, and her classes are relaxing. She’s really enthusiastic and interested in how my work turns out.” Felix laughed when describing how he first started out in class, saying that Ms. Burnett described him as a hard worker, but his first works were questionable and were definitely not his best work.

As for the platforms Felix uses to work on his art, he usually uses Adobe Photoshop. He said that although it took some time to get used to, it is a really powerful and useful tool, as it allows him to create various different images.

Felix uses his art for more than just his classes; he is using his own art for a video game he is developing. In the process of creating art for his game, he had to learn how to draw models and other essential images. As for the game itself, it involves a bar in space frequented by aliens. It’s important to distinguish each member of the bar from another, so he had to get creative with shapes and features.

In the process of creating drawings, he began to appreciate them more and more. Felix says that the freedom and simplicity of drawing are what attracted him to it, and it’s his favorite art style.

The idea for his game came from a concept art project he created in class. The concept grew into what became his game. Felix plans to finish the game using the art he creates, and he  hopes to release it to the public at a later date.
