Prior to winter break, the boys varsity basketball team won their fifth straight Paul “Frosty” Francis Kingswood Oxford Invitational Tournament, performing brilliantly over a weekend of amazing games.
Heading into the tournament, junior guard Co-captain DJ Biggins elaborated on how the team got ready for the weekend. “Our managers and coach watched many films before the game and gave us a scouting report on every player, so there was no surprise before the game,” Biggins said. “We knew the assignments both defensively and offensively.” Biggins was one of the key contributors to the Wyverns throughout the entire tournament, electrifying the crowd and playing with intensity.
Before taking the court, Head Coach Brad Seaman shared how special this tournament is for the players. “I tell them how they’re going to remember these games and be able to look back on them,” Coach Seaman said. Coach Seaman loved leading the team throughout the entire tournament.
On Friday night, the team was able to pull off a dominant 76-52 win over Pingree school. The team was led in scoring by Biggins with 20 points, along with senior guard Co-captain Justice Hanna with 16 points. Sophomore center Keenan Murphy made a big contribution with more than 10 rebounds and several blocks.
Moving on to Saturday’s game, the team won a hard-fought battle against King School, winning 81-76. The team was led in scoring by Biggins once again. Biggins put up a stellar 33 points. Junior shooting guard Will Parkhouse also scored 17 points in the first half, which allowed the Wyverns to build a lead.
Finally, on Sunday in the championship game, the team faced New York Military Academy, winning 68-56. They were led by Parkhouse, who scored 27 points, along with Biggins, who scored 19 points.
The team was very proud of themselves for winning another KIT. “It feels good,” Biggins said. “Of course, at the beginning, as a team, we were nervous, but as the games went on, we got more comfortable with each other and played our game of basketball.”
After the team finished the tournament as champions, Biggins was rewarded with the tournament’s MVP award. “Winning MVP was my favorite moment from KITs,” Biggins said. “Knowing all the hard work I put in was finally paying off, I was able to celebrate this moment with my team and coaches.” Biggins was well-deserving of this award. He played well throughout the entire tournament and earned this recognition.
Finally, Coach Seaman was very excited for his team. “I’m very proud of the guys,” Coach Seaman said. “They put in lots of effort into everything they do, and they are great teammates to each other.”
