KO varsity volleyball builds success through team chemistry and communication

The KO varsity volleyball team has made strides this season, earning a record of 10-3 as it continues to get further into the season.

While the team’s record reflects its outstanding performance on the court, its improved chemistry, communication, and determination have also played an important role in its progress. One game that demonstrated the team’s determination was the matchup on Oct. 21 against Worcester. KO got off to a slow start, falling short in the first set before bouncing back to be able to win the second. After losing the third set, the team found a solid rhythm and began to play with more confidence and energy. KO then went on to win the fourth and fifth sets, securing a big home win. The team’s ability to bounce back and regroup after a challenging start is a strong characteristic for them to have with the start of the postseason coming up.

This was seen through their following games. The Wyverns traveled to take on Miss Porter’s on Friday, Oct. 23 for the Fighting Daisy’s Dig Pink, the team’s annual event for breast cancer awareness, overcoming the noise of the crowd and winning 3-1. The next day on Saturday, Oct. 24, they stayed on the road and took the long haul to the Kent School, and despite being down to six players, meaning they couldn’t have had the key defensive role of a libero, they fought it out and won 3-2. Their most recent win was an easy 3-0 blowout against the Suffield Academy, back on the Wyvern’s home turf on Wednesday, Oct. 28.

One of the biggest differences that the team has made this year for the team has been the bond and communication within the team. According to junior libero Olivia Raccio, the team’s chemistry has improved significantly compared to last year.“It has been much better this year; everyone loves and supports each other,” Raccio explained. Last season, the team sometimes struggled with being negative toward each other; however, this season that has been replaced with encouragement and communication, even after losses.

The team’s ability to communicate through mistakes has also played an important role in this season’s development. Rather than becoming frustrated with one another, players have learned to talk through miscommunication and focus on improving together. “Everyone supporting each other has been a big factor,” Senior Middle hitter Alexis Nysirios explained. Allowing the team to work through challenges instead of letting mistakes affect its performance has been important to the team’s journey to be able to get to playoffs. Leadership has also been an important part of the team’s progress. While captains help guide the team, every player has a role in creating a positive atmosphere. Supporting teammates, communicating on the court, and staying focused during practice are all ways players can contribute to the team’s success, regardless of their position or title.

As the season continues, the team’s improved chemistry stands out as one of its greatest strengths. Learning to trust one another and communicate through difficult moments has helped the players create a stronger connection both on and off the court. In conclusion, the varsity volleyball team’s season is about more than its record. Through encouragement, communication, and a shared commitment to improvement, the players are demonstrating that a strong team is built on how its members support one another. As they continue competing, the bond they have developed this season may prove to be one of their most valuable strengths.
