Music from six feet apart

In the Middle

With the start of school, teachers and students alike have had to adjust the way their classes run as a result of COVID-19. The music block teachers in particular have had to recreate their courses entirely. For choral Director Steve Mitchell, this year has brought many distinct challenges.

“Normally in a chorus, you would get to sit in a group section and sing your part with your friends supporting you and it feels kind of safe, while this year chorus is more like private singing lessons,” Mr. Mitchell said.

Mr. Mitchell discussed some of the precautions they need to take in the classroom. “Everything is spaced six feet apart with a music stand between, in which case the students can talk, ask questions, and hum,” he said. “We’ve also built some plexiglass booths in front of the room, they are going to allow kids to go up and sing.”

In the spring when all students and faculty first began to transition into online learning, Mr. Mitchell was constantly thinking of new projects. “We came up with a bunch of projects that we did during class, like handwashing videos, writing songs, or reviewing other music,” Mr. Mitchell said.

Now, Mr. Mitchell has been trying new ways to keep his students engaged and enjoying the class.

Eighth-grader Rachael Lantner is also experiencing many new changes as a viola player in the orchestra. “I am excited to be back, but I miss being able to hear my section because before you could hear your section better since you were next to them,” Rachael said. Students like Rachael have had to take more risks, as it feels like they are playing by themselves.

Eighth-grader Claire Palmer is excited to try out the middle school band this year and appreciates all the work her band teacher, Todd Millen, has done for the class. “I admire that he is trying his hardest to keep us going and motivated using music.”

Although both students and teachers have had to make significant changes in their daily school lives, it is clear that everyone is making great progress and strides to foster a safe and healthy environment.
