Bringing coffee to school: The new trend

In the Middle

Many adults in the KO community drink coffee, but now several middle schoolers have started bringing it to school. Through conversations with several middle school students, it is clear why they are so fond of the tasty drink.

“On my way to school, I stop and get my coffee from Dunkin Donuts and then have it in class; that way it helps keep me awake,” eighth-grader Meredith Decker said. “My coffee order is an iced latte with almond milk. It is delicious, and I drink it every day.”

When asked why people should start drinking coffee, seventh-grader Ava Marseglia said, “personally, it helps me feel more awake and social, which is important for school. It’s also delicious and gives you a ton of energy. There are so many different things to add and a variety of ways to make your coffee that it never gets boring.”

Students are not the only ones who are drinking coffee at school. When asked about her coffee routine, Middle School math teacher Stacy Tomkiel said, “I am pretty dependent on coffee and it helps me wake up in the morning. I drink about three cups a day and get my coffee from Starbucks or J.René which is right near my house. To be honest, I like the smell of coffee even better than the taste, which is why I drink it every day.”

Meredith, Ava, and Ms. Tomkiel all agree that coffee is an essential part of their everyday routine, most importantly because it helps keep them awake in the morning.
