Zooming in for Grandparent’s Day

In the Middle

Every year, KO holds Grandparent’s Day, an event that is favored by many. Despite it being virtual this year, the members of the KO community were able to come up with a new way to host the special day.

Not only is it a favorite day for students and faculty, but Grandparent’s Day is also exciting for the grandparents themselves. “My grandparents love Grandparent’s Day,” eighth-grader Miya Scranton said. “Every year, a couple weeks before Grandparents Day, they always tell me how excited they are and they say that they already have their outfits picked out!”

Eighth-grader Leo Sussman agreed. “My Grandparents always enjoy the food,” he said. “To this day they still talk about how good the salmon was.”

KO faculty also greatly looked forward to having their students’ grandparents visit. “I love Grandparent’s Day, and it is one of my favorite days of the whole year,” Advancement Associate Frances Morris said. Because this day is cherished by everyone in the KO community, it was decided that, despite the crazy times, a virtual Grandparent’s day would be organized. “We didn’t want the year to go by without doing anything,” Ms. Morris said.

One positive aspect of Grandparent’s Day being virtual was that some grandparents that would not have been able to come in-person if the circumstances permitted were able to attend because of its being online. “This year, we got to see Grandparents that lived far away, which was great because we have missed seeing them in the past,” Ms. Morris said.

On the other hand, the challenging aspect of having Grandparent’s Day over Zoom was that not everyone was aware of how to use the online platform. Although Grandparent’s Day was virtual this year, it was still memorable and special for the grandparents and their grandchildren.
