Regionals musical artists persist in the midst of pandemic

The Regionals program for singers and musicians is well-known at KO. Performers from various ensembles come together to audition for a spot in a prestigious group, some auditioning for choir, some for band, and others for orchestra. However, with music rehearsals and performances being a top spreader of COVID-19, extreme precautions were taken this year in order to ensure a safe environment for all students. Unfortunately, this means that no concerts will happen this year; however, the audition process still occurred.

Through a series of audition tapes, rigorous training, and devotion, the regional program continued this year. Senior Sadie Margolis is a three-year member of the Connecticut Educators Music Association (CEMA) as a part of the choir section. “The North, South, East, and West all have their own regions,” Sadie said, “and they perform repertoire from different composers. It was great because we got to learn about different cultures and new music.”

The program ranges all throughout the country, and it’s a great way to embrace cultural appreciation, seeing as CEMA embraces music from all different facets of life. The program is very intensive, as it involves a three-day rehearsal ending in a recital performance. Sadie is quite accomplished in the CEMA program, placing in the national choir last year, the best choir in the country. This year, Sadie auditioned for a spot as a soprano singer.

Junior Zeno Chen took part in the audition process for a seat in the Regional band. Zeno plays alto saxophone and has been participating for about six years. “I’ve done the program all through middle school and high school since freshman year,” he said. “I think it’s a great program. If you get in, there’s a concert, and it’s nice to play with people on your level. It’s overall a good experience to improve your musicianship.” The band had a rigorous audition process, meaning only the finest of musicians in the Connecticut area were chosen.

For those who are serious about a career in music, auditioning for the Regional program is a must. Despite the chaos of our times, KO’s fine artists persist.
