New year, same Wyverns

2020 really dropped the ball. Now it’s 2021, and members of the KO community are hoping to leave the craziness that was last year behind. Wyverns have made their New Year’s resolutions and are beginning their flight to success.

Many Wyverns have New Year’s resolutions relating to mental health and positivity. The pandemic and a polarized political environment among other events have made 2020 a particularly stressful year. KO students are heading into 2021 with optimism for a more joyful 365 days.

Senior Issy Rome is certainly on that mission. “My new year’s resolution is to surround myself with people and things that make me happy,” Issy said. “In 2021, I am looking forward to starting a new chapter in college, and to graduating. In the new year I want to take in and appreciate every moment at KO as I prepare to go off into the world.”

Junior Katharine Doar shares the same feeling of positivity. “As the new year kicks off, I am looking to roll with the punches this year and try to approach challenges with optimism,” Katharine said. “It has been difficult at times this past year to stay positive but I am hopeful that 2021 will bring many happy moments.”

Senior Mike DeMio is also going to make an effort to be more go with the flow. “My New

Year resolution is to not allow things out of my control to affect me,” he said. “I had a rough end to 2020 and instead of dwelling on it, I want to use it as fuel to be a better person.”

Another common theme among KO students is the importance of gratitude in this difficult time. While so much has been taken away from highschool students in 2020, there is still so much to be thankful for. Going into 2021, senior Cami Forslund hopes to be able to reflect on her appreciation for all that she has and has accomplished. “My New Year’s resolution is to have gratitude and to be thankful for the things I have instead of focusing on the negative,” Cami said.

Senior Margo Dowgiewicz shares the same feeling of gratitude. “In 2020, it was really important to focus on what we have instead of what we are missing out on,” Margo said. “Moving into the new year, I am going to keep that feeling of thankfulness in mind.”

Some Wyverns have very specific goals for the new year. Senior Izzy Burke hopes to fine-tune a new passion of hers. “My New Year’s resolution is to learn how to cook, so when I go to college I am able to provide for myself without just eating takeout and packaged goods,” Izzy said. “I also hope to find an exercise routine that is beneficial for my body and mental health.”

Senior Maddie Thiessen also has a unique New Year’s resolution. “My goals for 2021 are to work on a more consistent self care regimen and to detach more from my screen,” she said. “As we all know, everything can be taken away from us in a span of two weeks, so I plan to stray from devices and live in the moment.”

Overall, senior Chris Sienko sums up the sentiments of KO students as they move into the New Year: “I hope that 2021 will bring some normalcy after a crazy 2020.”
