Senior Sloan Duvall has contributed to the KO News in a multitude of ways over the past four years. She has worn many hats over the course of her time at KO as a web editor, associate news editor, and this year, Head of Features and Head of Promotions and Public Relations. Sloan originally was interested in becoming a member of the KO News because she has always had a passion for writing, communications, and journalism. “I have always viewed journalism as a way to give a voice to those who wouldn’t usually speak up,” she said.
Sloan’s favorite memory from her time in the KO News is reporting news stories. One of these new stories that she especially enjoyed writing an article about was when KO hosted a naturalization ceremony in 2019. “I got to interview immigrants and their families,” she said. “I even talked to one family from Mexico in Spanish which was a really exciting journalism moment for me.” Sloan said that she will miss the process of reporting, researching, interviewing, and writing stories each month. “I’m extremely thankful for everything I have learned during my time as a part of the KO News,” she said.
Sloan’s advice for future members of the KO News is to pick stories that interest you and try to highlight voices that aren’t usually heard. Sloan’s many contributions to the paper will be greatly missed, and everyone at the KO News wishes her the best of luck as she goes on to college.
