Modifying for COVID-19: Students and teachers adjust their routines

In the Middle

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, both students and faculty alike have had to press pause and greatly adjust their regular plans and activities.

For Middle School administrative coordinator Brittany Dix, one hobby that she has had to leave behind as a result of the virus is horseback riding. “I miss horseback riding so much,” Ms. Dix said. “I loved being out and about, but sadly, there are still many necessary restrictions.”

The activities people have had to pause due to COVID-19 have been difficult to get back to, even as several health and safety restrictions in the state are gradually being lifted. Therefore, many have found new activities to take their place.

Ms. Dix, for example, used to go out to the park with her daughter Lily. Now, she resorts to bringing the fun home and entertaining her daughter at her own house until the pandemic is over, which she and Lily have gotten more used to.

Students feel a similar way as well. “Many of my activities have had to be moved inside,” eighth-grader Alyssa Tousignant said when commenting on how the pandemic has affected her exercise routine. “I play a lot of soccer and do my training mostly outside with my team, but now I exercise on my own inside for the safety of others.” Even with sports and other activities being moved outside, there are still many restrictions, so Alyssa and other students have found other ways to remain active and continue to participate in the activities they enjoy.

For seventh-grader Lia Prahl, COVID-19 has hindered her ability to go out in public with her friends. “Before [the pandemic], I loved walking around parks with my friends.” Lia said. “Now, my friends and I have to be much more cautious. Therefore, we have to distance more, especially since we are not able to be vaccinated yet. Recently, I have been making sure to do more fun activities at home.”With the Pfizer vaccine on the verge of being approved for individuals under 16 years of age, Lia and Alyssa are very hopeful for the future and cannot wait to return to participating in the activities they love.
