The Kingswood Oxford community welcomes new Upper School science teacher Tomas Kopecky to campus. Mr. Kopecky brings a wealth of knowledge and a strong passion for science and teaching to his new role. He has been in the teaching profession for 30 years, 18 of which were spent at the Chase Collegiate School in Waterbury.
Along with teaching, Mr. Kopecky has a love for tennis, and he cannot wait to coach boys JV tennis in the spring. Currently, Mr. Kopecky coaches boys JV soccer and is enjoying the experience of meeting new students beyond the classroom environment. Outside of school, one of Mr. Kopecky’s greatest hobbies is playing the classical guitar.
Mr. Kopecky is excited about the opportunity to get more involved at KO and has felt nothing but thoroughly welcomed on campus. He describes KO students as friendly and easygoing, and he appreciates how focused, intellectually curious, and hard-working they are.
“One thing that I find very different in the classroom here that used to be my pet peeve of mine from teaching at other schools is the use of cell phones,” he said. But at KO, Mr. Kopecky has not found cellphones to be a distraction so far, which he is really grateful and happy about.
Mr. Kopecky has also noticed that students strive to do well in their classes, but also that they enjoy one another’s company outside of the classroom. “They want to get good grades,” he said, “but I also think that at the same time, many of them see that there is life outside of grades, and I see them playing around and listening to music.”
Overall, Mr. Kopecky has greatly enjoyed his first month of teaching at KO, and has loved getting to truly know his students, as well his fellow faculty members. He cannot wait for the years to come at KO!
