KO’s award-winning dance program houses a plethora of talent. From ballerinas to hip-hop stars, we truly have it all. On one end of the spectrum, featured heavily in the production of the 2021 Choreographer Showcase, is sophomore Anna Tippner.
Anna has been a vital part of the dance program at KO since she arrived as a freshman last year. Her impressive technical precision as a ballerina and ability to quickly pick up choreography has allowed her to become a prominent part of the KO performing arts department.
Anna’s dancing career began when she was about three years old. “I think I’ve been dancing since I was three, but at that point I only did tap,” she said. “Then when I turned six, I went to a different studio and began doing ballet, tap, jazz, and modern.” Experienced in many different styles, Anna is able to adapt quickly to whatever style of dance she is tasked to learn, a difficult skill honed by only the best dancers.
Part of Anna’s relationship with dance is one of good memories and love. “It’s something that I’ve always enjoyed,” she said. “There isn’t really a reason, but it’s just always made me really happy. I always feel free.”
As with any art form, however, dance brings with it certain degrees of frustration. “There’s times when I get annoyed at my teachers, as I like being able to make it my own and [sometimes I] find it difficult to do so when teachers are restrictive and particular about the way their choreography is performed,” Anna said.
Over the years, dance has become a prominent part of Anna’s life. It makes her who she is, and it’s her true passion. This deep love has shown throughout her work so far this year and in the past years’ Choreographer Showcase. Friend and peer of Anna, senior Shoshana Levy, spoke to Anna’s amazing talent, drive, and dedication, as they were in two pieces together in this year’s Showcase. “I did the Wednesday and Friday classes with her,” Shoshana said. “She always tries her best with it, and you can tell she’s giving it her all.” The contemporary dance pieces the two girls were in together focused heavily on dance expression and a storyline, which Anna portrayed as a featured soloist in one of them. “She has a lot of talent as a dancer, and especially in the Choreographer’s Showcase,” Shoshana said regarding the performance, “It’s really great that we’re able to honor Anna as Artist of the Month, as she’s doing a really great job!”
