Netflix’s “Red Notice” has been a hit, quickly becoming the streaming platform’s largest movie debut of all time. The movie itself is very fun to watch, so long as you can take the time to actually sit down and enjoy it.
With three of the most famous actors in a movie, there was very little doubt that the movie would be successful. However, the sheer amount of success the film has had was unexpected. Of course, there is always room for a sequel, and the film definitely has an ending that hints at one.
The actors do a great job throughout the movie portraying their roles, with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson playing Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Ryan Reynolds playing Ryan Reynolds. By that, I mean that they play the same characters as in most of their other movies: funny, stupid at times, and very entertaining. Gal Gadot also plays an important role in the movie as “The Bishop,” but the main stars are Ryan Reynolds and The Rock.
The film’s plot is very simple, and it provides nothing too new or interesting. A group of thieves seeks after treasure, with team-ups between enemies, betrayals, and, of course, police chases. It’s a very fun movie, but if you begin to look at it through a critical lens or start thinking too hard about the characters’ actions, your opinion of the movie might be negatively affected.
Although the movie is very safe, with three stars packed into an action film filled with comedy, that doesn’t mean that it’s bad. When comparing it to other action movies, there are other movies that would probably be more worthy of your time. However, I do believe that the film is worth watching, simply because of the chemistry between the actors.
The chemistry, specifically between the Rock and Reynolds, is what keeps the film going, and it was one of the main reasons why I kept watching. Ignoring the unbelievable plot points, such as when they are put in charge of creating a new wall for their prison that they easily break out of, their star power and memorable lines single-handedly make the movie enjoyable.
An enjoyable aspect of the movie was that it felt like the actors knew there wasn’t much they had going for them. The plot was poor, and there were a lot of unnecessary stunts and action sequences. However, I didn’t watch this expecting a clear and precise plot that would keep me hooked. I watched it because I wanted to see Dwayne Johnson and Ryan Reynolds. I got exactly what I wanted.
In fact, that the film didn’t try very hard to explain the plot or spend a lot of time with exposition made it feel refreshing, in a way. An interesting plot would definitely have made the movie more enjoyable, but I didn’t go into the film expecting one. If you are the type of person who likes when the film has an overarching plot that comes together in a satisfying ending, this is not the movie for you.
“Red Notice” succeeds in its plan to entice viewers through the appeal of its three stars. If you don’t watch this movie, you’re not missing out on much. However, if you enjoy films where the chemistry between the stars is the most enjoyable part, you might thoroughly enjoy this production.
