“You” season 3 is a thrilling addition to the series

Reviews

After two years of anticipation, “You” season three arrived on Netflix on Oct. 15, 2021. The long-awaited season earned incredible reviews with thrilling plot twists and unexpected storylines.

Expect spoilers ahead, as a lot went down on the newest installment of “You.” As Joe and Love’s relationship grows, so does our apprehension for Joe’s future.

In the first season of “You,” we meet Joe Goldberg. On the outside, he’s just a normal guy: a nerdy bookstore owner with a passion for reading. We quickly learn that on the inside, he’s anything but normal. His new obsession with an aspiring writer, Guinevere Beck, consumes his mind until he achieves his end goal: for his love to be returned. Although he makes some questionable decisions throughout the first season, Joe turns out to be a character we all love to hate. His inner dialogue gives the audience insight into his twisted mind, making it so you can’t help but root for this complex character.

In season two, Joe desperately wants to start a new life. After his move to Los Angeles, he meets his other half: an equally manic chef named Love Quinn. Joe falls into his old routines and obsessive patterns in his attempt to forge a relationship with Love; however, he is met with an equally obsessive counterpart. This seemingly perfect couple carries into season three, making for an exciting new season as we watch Joe and Love navigate through married life in the suburbs of California.

Season three gives the audience an insight into the life of a seemingly average “perfect couple.” Their facade is convincing to their neighbors, as they are seen as a happy couple living with their newborn. Joe and Love’s relationship quickly crumbles at the start of season three as Joe finds his new obsession in his neigbor Natalie Engler. Although Love quickly takes care of this problem, Joe finds yet another woman to focus his interest on. While Joe falls quickly for his coworker, Love finds herself to be the center of attention of their college-aged neighbor. Joe and Love, desperate to keep up their display of a normal couple, go to great lengths to cover their tracks throughout this season. Although the two lovers seemed like a match made in heaven at the end of season two, the audience watches as their marriage falls apart in season three.

Their love story comes to an end, as only one of them is able to escape the deadly life they’ve created for themselves. As Joe strikes once more, Love warns him of his inevitable fate. “You” fans are at the edge of their seats waiting for the story of Joe’s next victim in season four.  Will he finally learn from his mistakes, or will he fall into his old habits once again?

The newest season of “You” earned incredible reviews, with some calling it “the best to date.” “With such an established fanbase, ‘You’ could be resting on its laurels by now, endlessly recycling its initial premise without recreating the excitement of the beginning,” Clémence Michallon from The Independent wrote. “Kudos, then, to the writers who have succeeded, exquisitely so, in taking it to new heights.”    The third season of “You” explored the inner workings of a seemingly “perfect couple,” adding even more depth to Joe’s character, with touches of comedy and unexpected plot twists.
