The KO girls varsity lacrosse team has ended the 2022 season on a positive note, embarking on a year filled with challenges, lessons, and victories for the squad.
Led by Head Coach Judy Bailey, the girls lacrosse team ended the season with a record of 4-10 against a tough schedule. With many girls new to the varsity level of competition, playing against such skilled competition was something that the Wyverns critically needed to prepare for. “This has been a challenging and rewarding season for our team,” Coach Bailey said. “Our goals at the start of the season were to have fun, for each player to improve her own personal skill set, and for the team to mesh on and off the field.”
Over the course of the season, the team faced many setbacks that shook up how the team would fare in its games, but the spirit of the Wyverns never dwindled. “We were challenged as our numbers were low and we faced injury and illness throughout the season,” Coach Bailey added. “We never used this as an excuse, and the girls always went out and gave their best effort in every game. Our play as individuals and as a team progressed nicely over the course of the season.”
Recently, the squad strung together back-to-back wins in the month of May, proving that the team was most definitely improving throughout the year. The Wyverns defeated the Ethel Walker School 14-9, before moving on to Marianapolis Prep, whom they beat 15-5. “Our game against Ethel Walker school was our best of the season,” Coach Bailey said. “The girls were in sync with each other, and the team play was phenomenal. We transitioned the ball upfield nicely resulting in multiple assisted goals.”
Despite Coach Bailey’s strong emphasis on teamwork and development, there have been numerous standout players that have contributed to the Wyverns’ success. Senior Co-captains midfielder Abby McLaughlin and midfielder Kaiya Deurloo have added a much-needed force to the team’s offense strategy, amassing goals throughout the year while spreading the ball and leading the team on the turf. Junior midfielder Allegra Kotowitz has also proved to be an important role player for the Wyverns, stepping up against fierce opponents.
Overall, the KO girls varsity lacrosse team has completed the 2022 spring season with promising development, exciting victories, and a strong spirit of teamwork, something that will prove to be extremely important as they continue down the road to success in the following years.
