With a strong season behind them, esports is ready to have another successful year. Esports is relatively new to KO, but has proved to be a strong competitor. In the 2021-2022 season the team made the regional playoffs in “Rocket League” but eventually fell short. This year the team is coming back with hopes of going further in “Rocket League” and improving their overall game.
The team started off with preseason where they practiced and exercised. For the week, there was a good turnout with around 10-15 players each day. They have a full roster with a mix of new players and experienced ones. This has allowed for the more seasoned players to teach the new members of the team, also creating a good dynamic.
This team dynamic is one of their strengths. “A lot of us bond over our love of playing these games, and we work together really well, always encouraging each other and having fun with each other,” senior Will Jacobs said.
From last year, there are some changes with the games the team will play. This year “Mario Kart” is being offered, but “League of Legends” will not be available. While the team has not had any games, they are working very hard in practice to prepare for their first match of the season on Sept. 15.
Practicing skills is crucial to creating a strong team, but so is setting goals for individual players, which is a big part of what the team emphasizes. “We are starting a weekly goal-setting process, where players set a goal for each week and then every day reflect on what they are doing and how it translates into their weekly goal,” Head Coach Ryan Brodeur explained. “Goals vary for each player as they have their own strengths and weaknesses.”
