This year, KO’s Middle School and Upper School have had the pleasure of welcoming French teacher Ms. Phillips to the community.
Ms. Phillips studied at Saint Lawrence University and majored in French and global studies. In college, Ms. Phillips worked as a Teacher’s Assistant for an intermediate French class, this was a great way for her to review her skills and also help students practice their French in fun and engaging ways.
After she graduated college Ms. Phillips began working in outdoor education with middle schoolers and some high school students. Ms. Phillips didn’t originally plan on teaching French, but after college, she realized she wanted to share the same love she found for the language with others. “I started learning French when I was a freshman in high school, and initially I was really intimidated by it,” she said, “but then I went to France with a class trip over spring break and I really loved it.” Ms. Phillips really enjoyed that she was able to see and experience everything she had learned about firsthand.
Ms. Phillips is currently involved in a teaching program similar to a mentorship.Through this program, she does not have to immediately take on the responsibilities of teaching five classes but is able to ease into them as the year progresses.
After coming from outdoor education, Ms. Phillips really enjoyed the Form 2 trip to Camp Chewonki. “It was a great way for me to get to know who they are outside of the classroom,” she said. In the classroom, she really enjoys seeing how passionate and engaged her students are.
During the fall, you can catch Ms. Phillips helping out with the Middle School B soccer team. One thing she is looking forward to this year is seeing all of the progress that her students make and watching them find the same passion for French that she has. We are really looking forward to having Ms. Phillips on campus this year!
