In her first year on the varsity field hockey team, freshman midfielder Kate Dempsey-Weiner has been an excellent role model, a reliable player, and a coachable athlete.
Dempsey-Weiner is an active AGH field hockey club player and has played field hockey for a considerable time. She said her favorite part about the game is the ability to develop and perfect skills.
Head Coach Chapin Yates believes that Dempsey-Weiner brings so much passion and love for the game to the team every single day. “She is inspiring to watch and motivates me to be a better coach,” Coach Yates said. “Kate takes on a strong leadership role as a freshman. I recruited Kate for her strong stick skills and field hockey knowledge, and it’s even more exciting to watch her find her voice on the field and in huddles.”
Assistant Coach Nicole Baratz agrees and describes Dempsey-Weiner as the definition of an impact player. “She completely transforms the field and makes all around her better players from it,” Coach Baratz said.
Dempsey-Weiner loves the support from her teammates and how they make her feel comfortable when trying new skills. “I like playing for KO because Coach Yates and Coach Baratz provide the knowledge as well as the support to the game and allow me to try new things that I may not have in other settings,” Dempsey-Weiner said. Her commitment to the team is felt during practices and games, where she works hard and hopes to be a role model for all the other players.
Dempsey-Weiner has stepped up into a new position this season with grace as the team’s center back, providing stability and support to all her teammates on the field. “Kate has remarkable field hockey skills, but that is not all that makes her such a special player,” Coach Baratz said. “As a freshman, she has come to the team and is already a leader and a role model.” Coach Baratz described the kind of attitude Dempsey-Weiner brings to the field. “She is always the first to cheer on a teammate and motivates others to do so as well,” she explained. “Kate has such a great work ethic and a positive attitude. She always comes to practices or games with a smile on her face and ready to light up the field.”
Junior midfielder Ashley Buckingham believes that Dempsey-Weiner has helped the team develop and start the season strong. “Kate is a positive leader on the team and is always cheering on her teammates,” Buckingham said. “She consistently brings energy to everything she does and makes everyone around her better.”
Dempsey-Weiner clearly has a huge presence on and off the field, despite being a freshman. Coach Yates can’t wait to see where she takes the team over the years. “We are so lucky to have an impact player like her,” Coach Yates said.
Dempsey-Weiner’s enthusiasm and dedication to the varsity team is continuously shown through her performance in practices and games. She is thrilled that she can compete and loves being part of the team. Dempsey-Weiner looks forward to continuing to be a motivating teammate and can not wait for the rest of her season!
