Player of the Moment: Cody Brew

Sports

Though the varsity hockey team hasn’t seen the same success as last season, a constant bright spot and standout for the team is senior Co-captain defender and forward Cody Brew, who has been exceptional all season. Brew’s efforts have helped the team fight through a season in which the team has struggled.

Day in and day out, Brew brings everything and leaves it all out on the ice. Brew is versatile, playing both forward and defense for the Wyverns, but truly showcasing his talents on defense. Brew has been a constant for the team, being a player that Head Coach John Hissick can rely on out on the ice.

Coach Hissick and Brew’s teammates all agree that he is one of the best players and an important asset to the team. Not only is Brew’s play on the ice vital for the success of the team, but his leadership is also important. Being a Co-captain, Brew has demonstrated excellent leadership skills that help guide the team through a tough season.

Brew has always been connected to hockey, playing since he was three years old. He mentioned how his father has been a role model and encouraged his love for hockey. “My parents definitely sparked my interest, more specifically, my dad,” he said. “My dad played growing up and all through high school.”

Brew also mentioned how crucial his dad has been in his development in the sport. “My dad has been a great role model for me, as he has taught me everything I know during my athletic career,” he said. “We have spent hundreds of hours traveling to tournaments and games for multiple sports, and over the years I have learned so much more than I could ever imagine.”

Many hockey players would say the best part of playing hockey is the physicality or strategy, but his favorite part is not specifically the sport itself, but rather the people. “I would say the best part about hockey is definitely the lifelong friendships that you develop over the years from playing,” he said. “All the memories you make while playing and traveling with the teams is definitely my favorite part of hockey.”

Brew, being a standout two-sport athlete in golf and hockey, has a real opportunity to play at the collegiate level in either sport, but his dream lies in golf. “It would be really cool to play college hockey, but my lifelong dream has been to play college golf,” he said. Whichever sport he decides to pursue, it’s safe to say that he will be exceptional.

Brew will continue to dominate the rink this season defensively and offensively and run the links in the spring season. We wish Brew good luck in his future endeavors.
