Boys varsity squash is up for the challenge

Sports

Another fall sports season has come and gone as the Wyverns transition into an exciting winter sports season. The boys varsity squash team is looking forward to the season, aiming to improve and build on the 2022-2023 season.

The team is led by Head Coach Robby Lingashi. Coach Lingashi is a seasoned coach for the Wyverns, taking on the role in 2013. He has immense national and international squash experience and will do everything he can to instill his knowledge in the boys varsity squash team and propel them forward.

The team had a solid season last year, finishing with a record of 5-7, with victories against Williston Northampton School, Suffield Academy, and Canterbury School. Senior Ian Russell called last year’s season a rebuilding year. “I think this year we are gonna come out stronger,” Russell said. “Our players have improved a lot.”

Graduating only one senior last year, there is plenty of experience to go around, which will only prove to be beneficial for the year ahead. The team will look to senior Bassil Chughtai’s experience to help Coach Lingashi lead the team forward. The Wyverns will also need junior Captain Jack Krieble to step into a big role this season as the new captain and one of the strongest players on the team in the No. 1 position.

The future is very bright for the team, pulling up two seventh-graders, Nicolas Waldron and Ryan Lingashi. These young players will get invaluable experience on the varsity team this year and will be achieving great things down the line in their high school squash careers.

Russell has a few goals in mind for himself this year, including a lofty goal of winning every match that he plays, but he also has a big goal for the team as a whole. “We want to have a winning record this year,” Russell said. “That’s what we want to strive for. I’m really looking forward to doing everything that I can to help the team fulfill this goal.”

The team has a very similar schedule to last year, but they will face strong Founders League opponents once again this year in Loomis Chaffee and Avon Old Farms, teams who bested the Wyverns last season. However, Head Coach Robby Lingashi believes the team is up for the challenge and well-prepared to take the next step and take down these teams. We wish the boys varsity squash team the best of luck for the 2023-2024 season.
