Girls varsity basketball ends season on high note

Sports

This year’s girls varsity basketball team experienced tremendous growth and success on the court. The team finished with a .500 record, going 11-11 on the year.

Although the season did not end in more wins than losses, the team won many significant games that in past years they have not done.

Assistant Coach Judy Bailey is extremely proud of the team’s effort and dedication since December. One game in particular sums up her contentment with the team’s performance this season. “Our game away at Cheshire Academy is a perfect example of a big win,” Bailey said. “We got in a hole early, going down 10; however, through grit and determination we were able to storm back and pull off a huge win on the road.” The team won 62-53 in a thrilling back-and-forth game.

Coach Bailey was also extremely proud of the individual improvements from the team this year. “All of our young players stepped up this year,” Bailey said. “Eighth grade guard Eden Gonzalez made tremendous progress throughout the season and so did eighth grade forward Maddie Brilliant.”

Along with Bailey, players on the team were proud of their teammates and the effort that was put in by them all year. Sophomore guard Samaria Gonzalez had a successful season herself. However, when asked about the season, the first thing she did was give praise to her departing seniors, particularly the captains. “Senior guards [Co-captain] Liv Stevens, [Co-captain] Aashni Patel, and Georgia Louis all were amazing leaders and had a massive impact on our success this year,” Gonzalez said. “Without their leadership, we would not have been able to be as successful as we were.”

Looking back at the Wyverns’ season, they had some impressive results. Two clutch wins over Westminster resulting in a season sweep were major wins for the team; both games were extremely competitive as well, ending in a 38-30 final and a 38-35 final. KO also had wins against Ethel Walker, Canterbury, and Williston Northampton. These wins were all challenging games, but through hard work and effort, the Wyverns were able to prevail.

Looking forward to next season, with key sophomores returning, the 2024-2025 girls varsity basketball team looks to be even better than they were this season. Patel shared some words of wisdom for the team next year, inspiring them to strive for greatness. “Now that I am off to college next year, I want the team to know how much practice matters,” Patel said. “One important message I learned was to practice how you play, and I want everyone on the team next year to do this so that they can get better each day.”

Finishing with an 11-11 record, the girls varsity basketball team definitely has earned themselves respect within the Class B realm. Next year, the girls look forward to building off of their momentum from this season and finishing with a record above .500. Look for next year’s team to be stronger than ever and to make significant strides.
