Musician of the Month: Audrey Karasik

Arts

“Singing just brings me a lot of comfort and joy in every respect,” reflected senior Audrey Karasik. “It’s how I express myself.” From a young age, Audrey has been inclined towards the arts, notably musical theater and singing. Not only is music a creative outlet, it’s what guides Audrey through her everyday life.

In third grade, she began performing in musicals through the JCC, finding inspiration in the likes of actresses and singers Audra McDonald and Barbra Streisand. “Audra McDonald has one of the most brilliant voices in the world,” Audrey said. “She’s just so talented.” On a more personal note, she respects Barbra Streisand because of her ability to stay true to herself despite major Hollywood criticism.

At KO, Audrey explores every opportunity presented to her in the musical realm. She has acted in the winter musical every year, is a member of Oxfordians and Outlook, and even pursues vocal lessons and competitions outside the bounds of her high school. Audrey attributes much of her success to Director of Theater Kyle Reynolds. “Someone who’s helped me grow a ton is definitely Mr. Reynolds,” she explained. “He’s pushed me to explore different parts of my voice and different tones and styles.” Additionally, Audrey is enrolled in lessons at the University of Hartford, through which she can be recommended for participation in regional voice competitions. “Last year, I won an award from the Musical Club of Hartford, which was really fun,” she recalled.

Although Audrey’s musical pursuits are extensive, they rarely are a source of stress and instead provide comfort for her. “I see everything through music, and I interpret everything through music,” she said. In terms of a future career, singing has always been at the back of her mind. “It’s just something that I love and that makes my day better, and it’s a way of processing my emotions,” she said.

In the future, she’s certain that music will be a vital part of her life. “I might major or minor in music in college, and if I decided that wasn’t enough for me, I might want to pursue a career,” she said. Although she is still uncertain about where she’ll attend college, she was recently rewarded with the Leonard Bernstein Fellowship from Brandeis University. “It’s the most selective fellowship they offer, and it’s just such an honor to receive it and to be recognized,” she said.

Audrey shared advice to those hoping to become involved in music, regardless of their experience. “My mom just started taking voice lessons, and she was so nervous,” Audrey said. “Sometimes it’s scary because other people are at a point beyond you, but you should just focus on your own progress instead of comparing yourself to others. It’s never too late to start.”
