The boys varsity golf team has been dominating the green this season, showing their dedication and desire to win.
The team is made up of two seniors, Assistant captain Ty Russo and Jackson Drapeau; two juniors, Ryan Sadowsky and Alex Braunstein; and two sophomores, Captain Austin Perkins and Jared Paldino.
Head Coach Michael Wolf gave insight on how the team has been doing. “The season has gone very well,” Coach Wolf said. “I am proud to see the jump our players have made from last year to this year.” Coach Wolf also said that the players get along well. “It’s a very easy environment to be around and play in,” he said. “It’s a big reason why we have success.”
Perkins agreed that the season has been very successful for the team. “We have gotten to play at lots of amazing courses, and everyone has improved their games exponentially,” he said.
Perkins also mentioned his experience as a young team captain. “It is something that is not seen very often,” Perkins said, “but Coach Wolf has a lot of faith in me to lead this program by example.”
The team has had a solid record of 8-10-1, with big wins against Kent, Loomis, and Pomfret. KO was able to beat Loomis Chaffee by a score of 207-216, and Williston by a score of 207-231, and also tied Choate by a score of 207-207. In this, Perkins was a medalist, shooting an even par 36. KO’s most recent match against Choate Williston and Loomis and was also on their senior day, where they celebrated Russo and Drapeau, allowing both players to play at one and two for the first time. Both seniors played well and this earned the team a shared victory with Choate in this quad match.
Paldino’s highlight of the season was shooting an even par 36 in the team’s first match. “It was a turning point for me and gave me confidence for the rest of the season,” Paldino reminisced.
Paldino has high expectations to end the season. “I want to continue to play well,” Paldino said. “I hope the team also continues to play well, as we have been putting in lots of work.”
Perkins has been exceptional this season, having been a medalist multiple times. Other standout players include Paldino, who has medaled a few times. The Wyverns had a very solid day at the Founders League tournament on May 18, at Watertown CC hosted by Taft. The Wyverns placed 5th out of nine teams and Perkins finished tied for second with a +2 73. Paldino also shot a solid +8 79. The Wyverns will look to end the season on a high note at the KITs on wednesday May 22 at KOs home course, Gillette Ridge.
