Football Continues Strong Season

Coming off of a 4-4 season last year, Kingswood Oxford football looked to bounce back this fall. The team now sits at 4-2, fighting for an opportunity to compete in the playoffs.

The season started out with an away game against a talented Dexter Southfield team. Unfortunately, they lost 49-39, but the match showed signs of what the team is capable of. The Wyverns bounced back with a four-game win streak, including exciting wins over Hamden Hall, Pingree, Greenwich Country Day, and Capital Prep. On Friday, Oct. 18, they suffered a defeat against Worcester Academy, but still scored 34 points.

Even with two losses against their record, the Wyverns’ offense has proved to be unstoppable, averaging 35.83 points per game with a variety of players scoring touchdowns including junior wide receiver Davonne Biggins, junior running back Justin Morle, and sophomore receiver Xavier Newton. The team is currently ranked number two in scoring throughout New England and can score both by throwing or running the ball. “There is honestly no way to stop our offense,” Head Coach Brandon Batory said. “It’s just trying to limit it the best you can.”

The team has had significant help from senior quarterback Co-captain Stephen Bailey, junior linebacker and running back Cam Thomas, and the entire offensive line, including junior offensive linemen Donavan Lampkin and Zach Dewitt.

The team would not be this successful without the help of their four captains, senior linemen Julian Przecioska, Bailey, junior lineman Nick Chompko, and Morle. “They’ve been great, and we [also] have leaders outside of the captain role,” Coach Batory said. “This is one of the best groups of guys I’ve been with.” Coach Batory is very proud of the team’s work on the field, and their work ethics in the classroom.

Throughout this season, the team has had an amazing time. Junior receiver Kam Laprise said his favorite moment from the season was beating Hamden Hall because it was the first win of the season, and not many people expected them to win. Biggins added to this, saying there were times during the game when the team could have argued and turned on each other, but they didn’t. This was a major turning point in the season as it was the second game, and the first win.

In addition to winning games, football is also about making lifelong friendships. “I enjoy playing with my two closest friends, Justin and Cam,” Biggins said. “We all grew up together, and being able to play with your childhood friends is no better feeling.”

The team will look to continue their great seasons with upcoming games against Proctor Academy, and Canterbury School. The boys are now 4-3 with a New England championship game on their mind, these next two games are crucial.
