Wyverns enjoy fun-filled spirit week

During the week of Oct. 6, the KO community enjoyed a special week of dressing up and down in celebration of Hewett Day. The student government organizes an annual Spirit Week in the second week of October as a buildup to the Hewett Day celebration. This year, Hewett Day took place on Friday, Oct. 11.

When each student and faculty member woke up to their alarms on that cool, brisk Monday morning, a wave of comfort had come over them – they were allowed to come to school in their pajamas. Monday’s theme being Pajama Day was the perfect way to start off a week of celebration. When walking through the halls, one would find a lot of students in cozy flannels, with a number of students in onesies. Everybody walked to their classes with a little extra excitement that day.

As Tuesday rolled around, the halls were filled with an entirely different theme. Decades Day provided a space for students to bring out the costume trunk and take us back to the 70s, 80s, or 90s. This day was filled with a lot of group costumes, including a large group of students who dressed up as yoga instructors from the 1980s. They wore brightly colored leggings and shirts, embodying some of that decade’s most fashionable trends.

In order to make your mark during Wednesday’s theme, you might have had to do some extensive planning with a partner to be able to participate. Wednesday brought on the theme “Rhyme Without Reason.” Partners picked two words that rhyme but otherwise have no connection to each other, such as rapper and flapper, or reader and cheerleader.

Thursday brought a fun new twist to the week, but students definitely enjoyed partaking in it. Dress Like a Teacher Day gave students the opportunity, as it’s implied, to dress like one of our cherished faculty members. A number of students dressed up as math teachers Michael Greenwald and Ryan Harris, as well as Head Coach of varsity boys basketball Brad Seaman.

The culminating day of the week was probably the most anticipated inside the walls of Kingswood Oxford. For the first time of the year, all students could enjoy a dress-down spirit day, meaning they could wear their KO sweatpants or sweatshirts without getting dress-coded. This idea was a hot topic, since last year, every single Wednesday of the school year was a designated spirit day. However, leading into this year, “spirit days” were completely stripped from the schedule, only to be brought out during special occasions. This Friday happened to be the first of its kind.

Overall, Spirit Week proved to be a hit once again, as students went all-out each day. This created a momentum of excitement throughout the week as it led up to Grandparents Day, Hewett Day, and a long weekend.
