The Pickle Pioneeers

Students within the KO community are always finding ways to get themselves involved. Whether through clubs, sports, or entrepreneurship, students are paving paths for their future. Seniors Jack Krieble, Ryan Sadowsky, and Jacob Barash have all developed a passion for business and entrepreneurship through their very own pickle business, “The Pickle Pioneers.”

This pickle business began after the three of them signed up for the West Hartford pop-up market, and needed something to sell. “We were brainstorming and then randomly landed on pickles,” Jack said. Through different farmers markets, pop-ups and other opportunities, the Pickle Pioneers have made around $5,000 in sales so far—an impressive amount for their own startup.

With so many different types, recipes, and batches, coming up with an original pickle recipe could take weeks. So, to begin, they found an online recipe, and slightly changed it every time. “At first we would just kind of wing it and see what we could remember from the last time until we got a more consistent recipe,” Ryan said.

Right now, the Pickle Pioneers are facing a slight roadblock as their business did not get reapproved this year. “Since there’s no way for them to verify if our ingredients are stored correctly since we’re making it in our houses, they didn’t approve it,” Jacob said. However, this did not stop their business. Rather, this small setback simply relocated them to the Jewish Community Center, where they now are given access to the kitchen there every few weeks.

As spring rolls around and farmers markets open up, we look forward to seeing sales increase in their business! If you’re a pickle fan, make sure to check out the Pickle Pioneers online
