The KO girls’ varsity golf team, starting with a 0-4 record, has faced challenges but remains hopeful of having success as the season continues.
After the first two weeks of the season, Head Coach Nicole Baratz feels that the team is still finding itself, which can take time. “We have a very enthusiastic group,” Coach Baratz said. “They show up every day ready to get better, whether it be on the course playing nine or on the chipping and putting green working on the short game.”
Starting off the year on April 3, versus Berkshire and Miss Halls, the team showed up to play. In a matchplay format, each player in each group, instead of competing in the standard stroke play format, played matchplay. Freshman Noa Taback and senior Captain Alexa Wolf unfortunately did not win their matches against their opponents, but the other players did not back down, winning the other three matches, which resulted in an unfortunate 2-3 loss.
Wolf has spent three years in the program, with this year being the second that the girls have officially competed at the varsity level. “The first match was a huge success, despite the outcome,” Wolff said. “ We have multiple girls who just picked up the game, and they are already competing in varsity matches, but that doesn’t mean we can not have success.”
After having last year to test the waters, the girls are focused and ready to compete and play with the best.
The second match of the year took place on April 9, against Taft and Westminster. The result was a 1-4 loss, with sophomore Sienna Dubois picking up the lone win for the Wyverns. The girls came on April 23 to take on Ethel Walker and Hotchkiss. Unfortunately, the Wyverns fell short, but there were some highlighted moments from the match. Wolf led KO as their medalist of the match, shooting her season low score. Dubois also had a very strong performance in this match for the Wyverns. The Wyverns look to carry their momentum from this match over to the end of their season.
The middle of May is when the post-season begins as the girls will compete in the Founders League tournament on May 17, and later, the culminating event of the year, the Pippy O’Connor tournament hosted by Miss Porter’s School. We wish the girl’s varsity golf team the best of luck as they look to finish their season on a high note.
