The girls tennis team has been on fire to start the season, and with a record of 5-0, the Wyverns look to keep this momentum throughout the season.
The team has had some big wins so far this season, including a 7-2 victory against Worcester on April 9, and another 7-2 win against Kent on April 12. “The season has gone well so far,” Head Coach Ron Garcia said. “The season is young, but we’re in a good position thus far to achieve our goal of finishing the season as the number one seed in the NEPSAC Class B championship.”
The team also had a big win against Wilbraham and Monson School on April 8, coming out 6-1. “So far, my favorite moment took place while playing against Wilbraham and Munson,” senior Captain Ysabel Albert said. “During our matches, it started flurrying and everyone was freezing. That day, we realized that we have to be ready to play in any condition, regardless of whether or not we can even feel our fingers and hands while we play.”
Albert has been a veteran for the Wyverns this season and has contributed and been critical to the success of the team. The team has many other strong returning players, including sophomore Noor Sayej and junior Captain Alex Doering. “We have the great advantage of having the best player in the Founders League in Noor Sayej and two fantastic captains in Alex Doering & Yzzy Albert,” Coach Garcia said.
As a new season starts, the team looks to complete a new journey. “You can’t step into the same river twice, I like to say,” Coach Garcia noted. “The river is always moving.”
The Wyverns have been putting in lots of work to prepare for their matches. “Before each match, we have team meetings to compile our goals and share pieces of advice,” Albert said. “For away games, on the bus, we play music and enjoy each other’s company. On the other hand, for home matches, we sometimes meet in the locker room to hear thoughts from Coach Garcia, especially before playing our big competitors.” The chemistry is evident among this year’s team.
The team has a positive mindset going into each game and can utilize each other for support. “As a captain, I know that I must come to every match and practice ready to play,” Albert said. “I know that I must lead the team and provide support for my teammates. When players get down on themselves during a match, I know I must try to lift their spirits and encourage them to keep trying.”
Recently, the Wyverns competed in back-to-back games on Friday, April 25, and Saturday, April 26. On the 25th, the Wyverns traveled down to Rye Country Day School and came out with a narrow 4-3 victory. The next day, the girls woke up early and pulled off a convincing 5-0 victory over Cheshire Academy.
The team is looking to finish the season off strong by winning a championship, and would love support from everyone. If you have the opportunity, go out and support the Wyverns as they look to win both founders and another New England Championship.
