Tik Tok is an important place for people, especially young and non represented groups to represent themselves. Banning it could take away free speech from 150 million Americans and allow the government too much control over online communication.
I don’t think Tik Tok should be banned in the US because it brings joy, helps people connect, and allows users to learn new things, with studies showing it can be associated with feelings of happiness.
“Tik Tok is a social media platform for creating and sharing, and discovering short videos. The app is used by young people as an outlet to express themselves through singing, dancing, comedy, and lip singing, and allows users to create videos and share them across a community.” Tik Tok has become more popular because of its personalized video feed, it’s user friendly, and how easy it is to share content. Tik Tok has only been becoming more advance and more popular. Tik Toks active design focuses on a highly engaging and personalized user experience, leveraging short-form video content and a powerful recommendation algorithm.
Even though the majority of the world enjoys Tik Tok there is still a group of people that aren’t big fans of Tik Tok. “Tik Toks addictive design, potential for misinformation, and national security concerns are some reasons why it’s not considered good by some.” On a deeper level, FBI Director Chris Wray has said Tiktok “Poses a national security risk, adding that Chinese companies are required to essentially do whatever the Chinese government wants them to in terms of sharing information or serving as a tool of the Chinese government.” “ The Tik Tok case undergoes the growing tensions between national security, digital privacy, and free speech in the US government’s approach to cyber security. The website “ System 4u” talks about how TikTok does not do a great job with respecting privacy. “ The app requests access to camera, photo library, music, microphone, calendar, contacts, location detection even when running in the background.” Some believe that Tiktok can be an addictive app and can seriously damage the mental well-being of its users– particularly young people.
Some people (like me) believe that Tik Tok should not be banned and the app is very useful. Tik Tok has great educational content. Beyond Entertainment, Tik Tok host a wide variety of educational content, ranging from tutorials and how-To videos to news updates and discussions on various topics.” Tik Tok is also great with community building. “
Tik Tok fosters a sense of community by allowing users to connect with others who share their interest, creating spaces for discussions and collaborations.” One of my favorite characteristics about Tik Tok is their entertainment and their community.

In conclusion, TikTok should not be banned in the U.S. because it serves as a platform for creativity, connection, and learning, while also bringing joy to millions of users and positively impacting mental well-being.
