Before the school’s biggest night of the year, Kingswood Oxford students and faculty commemorated Hewett Day on Saturday, Oct. 18, beginning with a home game for each fall sport. The stands of every game were packed with friends and family, who were dressed in crimson and black in support of Wyvern Nation. Afterward, the fun continued well into the evening with the annual Homecoming Dance.
Around 7:30 p.m., students arrived at KO in their most stunning dresses and snazziest suits, excited to enjoy good music and food with their friends and dance the night away. Now that construction on campus is complete and the brand-new Community Commons building has opened, students are excited to host their first major community event of the year in the cafeteria.
The theme for this year’s Homecoming was “Masquerades,” a popular historical event in which attendees typically wear a partial face mask to maintain anonymity and promote an air of mystery. The Community Commons Cafeteria and Atrium were decorated with a red carpet, gold and black balloons, and sparkling streamers, which perfectly complemented the theme. When welcomed at the door, students had the opportunity to choose any mask they would like to wear throughout the evening. Overall, the dance proved to be a success, with students flaunting their new accessories as they made the most of the opportunity to bond and let loose outside the classroom.
Although the night went as smoothly as planned, the Student Government Association (SGA) received constructive criticism and hopes from students to address specific issues in the future. SGA’s Treasurer, senior Shreya Adhlak, said that after receiving feedback, she now understands what changes could be made to address the concerns.
In particular, she stated that SGA will be working to improve both the lead-up to and the actual pacing of the dance. “Next year, we hope to make more banners and advertising for [Homecoming], which will get students even more excited,” she explained. “[As well, we will be] working on the longevity of the event so people will hopefully stay for the whole night.”
Additionally, Shreya mentioned that there were minor issues with the lighting in the cafeteria and the overall quality of the music, which can be easily addressed to make next Homecoming the best one yet.
Even with these issues, students ultimately said they were happy with how the event went. Not only were they having fun tearing up the dance floor, but they were also delighted to see everyone in their hauntingly beautiful masquerade masks as well, which was most definitely a highlight of the night. Memories were made, friendships were strengthened, and overall, a fantastic experience was had at KO’s 2025 Homecoming Dance.
