KO juniors step back in time at Gatsby-themed prom

News

On Saturday, April 11, the KO class of 2027 traveled back in time to the “Roaring Twenties” as they celebrated their Gatsby-themed prom in the Community Commons, where they spent the night dancing, taking pictures, and creating memories.

Stepping into the Commons was like stepping into one of Gatsby’s lavish parties; the room was completely transformed with shimmery gold streamers lining the ceiling, feathered headdresses and shiny sequins illuminating the room, and a black and white tiled dance floor standing in the center of the room.

It was the perfect day to party and have fun. Students started the night with pictures at the “old money” themed photo booth that included fun props and cardboard cutouts to accessorize the pictures with. After pictures, students snacked on festive appetizers, including beautiful charcuterie boards, tasty desserts, and colorful, fizzy mocktails and drinks.

Students spent the majority of the night jamming out and showing off their moves on the checkerboard dance floor. The DJ was loud, the music was great, and the night was well spent. Whether they were screaming the lyrics to a Katy Perry song or doing the well-known “Cotton-eye Joe,” students agreed that the dancing was one of the most memorable parts of the night.

Junior Seda Walsh expressed her love of the event. “I think my favorite part was definitely dancing,” Seda said, “but I also had fun taking pictures beforehand with my friends.” The event was one to remember for all of the students.

The rest of the night was spent on the dance floor, in the photo booth, or at the long folding tables covered in gold and white tablecloths and decked out with flowers and feathers. Students went to replenish their energy with the tasty dessert selection of Gatsby-themed cupcakes, brownies, and cookies.

Although the music and festivities were the main show of the event, what made the night even more special were the small, yet thoughtful details given by the Parents Association. The Parents Association had the idea to provide flip-flops for students to take a break from their formal shoes and uncomfortable heels. The gorgeous decorations were also due to the PA, including a festive balloon arch, gold, white, and black streamers and lights, and fun chair and table covers, completely transforming the cafeteria into one of Gatsby’s “Roaring Twenties” parties.

The Parents Association was in charge of planning, organizing, and producing the junior prom, and they did an extraordinary job. “It was evident that they weren’t just doing it because they felt like they had to,” Seda said. “They were actually putting in effort because they cared. The entire Commons was a different place. It was special.”

KO truly cannot thank them enough for putting on such a wonderful event. Huge thanks go out to our parents and faculty chaperones as well. The night would not have been possible without them.

Overall, the night was a massive success. Junior prom was a great way for students to spend time with their friends and create lifelong memories that will be key contributors to their high school experience.
