Senior Goodbye Profiles – Austin Perkins

Features

As KO News says goodbye to another graduate, senior Head Sports Editor Austin Perkins leaves behind a strong presence. Joining the staff at the end of his freshman year after taking the journalism class, Austin quickly found his place and was inspired to join by his interest in writing and experiences, as well as by working with English teacher and Faculty Advisor Cathy Schieffelin.

Throughout his time, Austin has found particular enjoyment in News Days when the staff would all gather on Sunday morning with bagels and energy, ready to look over and put the paper together.

Like many students, Austin had particular challenges with procrastination and tracking people down for the interview process. He learned to overcome these obstacles by staying persistent and planning for his writing processes.

After graduation, Austin is attending the University of Florida, where he has committed to play golf. He is excited to continue his writing by potentially joining the newspaper there.

He finishes his time with the newspaper with a final point of advice for students not in KO News, as well as new members: “I would say just definitely take journalism. Even though KO News is challenging, it’s really fun. You learn a lot of great life lessons. You really can’t procrastinate or else you fall behind, so just stay on course.”
