As the fall season kicks back up again, the KO field hockey team is getting into the mid-season groove. This year, the KO field hockey team has been under the leadership of new Head Coach Kait Perrelle, who is eager for what awaits this season. The team has started the season off with a 1-2 record.
Last year, the KO field hockey team had five seniors graduate. Coach Perelle has already started to give the team new expectations and her own coaching style, which can be something that’s hard to adjust to. But this team has seemed to be able to pick up on these things very easily. “This team is flexible and really loves to learn and soak up new knowledge,” Coach Perelle said. “I am so impressed with their ability to adjust to a new coaching and playing style.”
The team started their season out with a game resulting in overtime, and in another game, Wyverns ended up falling short losing 2-1 to Miss Porter’s School. The team played a game against Hopkins School on Wednesday, Sept. 23, winning in a close game, 1-0. One of the key moments of this game was when Backer scored with an assist from sophomore Brooke Bisallon.
On Sept. 26, the team played Worcester Academy, but went to overtime. Another game lost against Loomis Chaffee School, resulting in 3-1. The team played Suffield Academy on Oct. 3 and lost with a final score of 4-1.
Coach Perelle has also mentioned how teammates support one another on and off the field. This year’s field hockey team is very close-knit. They all seem to have very good relationships with one another, and they seem to feel like a truly connected team. “I think the words that are really fitting for our team are funny, supportive, and competitive,” senior midfield Captain Marin Backer said. “We really want to compete this year, and I think we’ve shown that with our first game going into overtime and winning our second game.”
The current team goals for this season are varying. They are hoping to not only have a winning record this season but also to have a season where they learn the little skills, and they want to be able to have more knowledge in the sport itself. The team also hopes to build a strong team chemistry that can be woven into how the team is run for the next season or seasons. “We are all looking for victories in every sense of the word,” Coach Perelle said. “In games, of course, but also in the little moments of learning a skill we’ve been working on for weeks or executing a corner that we’ve been trying to perfect.”
The team is getting ready for their next home game against Berkshire School on Oct. 7.
