The Record Room

Reviews

Hello again, students, teachers, and other readers of The Record Room! I haven’t really been filled in yet in terms of the demographics of my column, so I’m not sure exactly who is taking this magical, mystical, musical journey with me (besides my parents, who read this column before it even comes out).

Whoever you are reading this, welcome back to The Record Room: my monthly column in which I have made it my personal duty to document what the members of our KO community are listening to. And, in a stroke of creative genius (and not at all a result of major writer’s block), I’ve decided to continue with asking the big question featured in last month’s issue: what are people listening to? More specifically, what they’re listening to at the exact moment I spring the question on them. Now, without further ado, let’s begin with our first volunteer, junior Epephanie ‘Piff’ Laboy.

When I asked, Piff was listening to “Hipocresía” by Marc Anthony. Released in 2013, “Hipocresía” and its accompanying album, “3.0,” showcase Anthony’s immense talent as one of the leading artists in Latin music. This talent was recognized at the 2014 Latin Grammy Awards when Anthony won Best Salsa Album for “3.0.”

Piff has recently shown a new, heavy interest in Marc Anthony’s music, and rightfully so. “Hipocresía’s” brassy, vibrant instrumentals truly mesh well with the heart-wrenching emotions that Anthony successfully captures with his lyrics. Lyrics such as “Hipocresía morir de sed con tanta agua/en mi sonrisa escondo el llanto/no se cómo lo hago queriéndote tanto,” which roughly translates to “Hypocrisy to die of thirst with so much water/in my smile I hide the crying/I do not know how I love you so much,” exemplify this raw emotion that Marc Anthony is known for describing through his music. Overall, Piff’s song choice gets a 10/10 from me. While “Hipocresía” does not fall into my preferred genre of music, it is a beautiful song nonetheless, and I highly suggest that anyone reading listen to it.

The next song up for review comes from junior Faith Potter, and I will say that this one was quite unexpected. Upon my asking, Faith was listening to “Koopa Cape” (from “Mario Kart Wii”) credited to the artist “Arcade Player.” If you do know me, you know that I am one of the few people that still has a Wii system, and I absolutely love playing “Mario Kart Wii,” so this song suggestion was not foreign to me whatsoever. “Koopa Cape” features a melody of tropical instrumentals that pair nicely with the game’s racetrack itself. While the song isn’t necessarily one I’d go out of my way to listen to, I am glad that Faith was listening to “Koopa Cape” so that I could get the opportunity to reminisce on the incredible, revolutionary, technological innovation that is “Mario Kart Wii.” Without a doubt, Faith’s choice receives an 11/10.

In conclusion, I have cool friends, and they listen to cool music – from Marc Anthony to the Mario Kart Soundtrack. If you want to be one of my cool friends and suggest a specific album, EP, or song that could potentially be featured here, shoot me an email. My name is Sophie Glazier, this has been “The Record Room,” and I’ll see you all next month.
