From Associate Editor of both the Reviews and Arts departments, to the Head of Reviews, senior Nika Garfield will be dearly missed on the KO News staff. Nika loved the opportunity to use the KO News as a way to introduce people to new things.
“ I just wanted to expose people to more pieces of media,” Nika said. “I just want people to engage with stuff that they love in a critical way.”
Nika’s favorite article she’s written was on the movie “Amadeus,” which is about Mozart and his musical competition with Antonio Salieri. It is one of her favorite movies, and she took it as an opportunity to expose people to a movie that they might not know about.
Her KO News experience has helped Nika gain confidence in her writing and has made her a stronger writer. “I used to be very scared to share my personal writing with other people, like when you do peer review,” Nika said. “It’s just very scary because you don’t know how that other person’s gonna think.”
She shared how much she came to value peer feedback. “Everyone there is here to help you and they want to support you,” she reflected. “When I was an Associate Editor, I was shaking a little bit whenever I would submit my articles, but then I realized that they just wanna help.” When asked about advice she would give to those just joining the KO News, she explains that people shouldn’t be scared of sharing their writing. “ Don’t be afraid to push your boundaries,” Nika advised. “You should do something that makes you uncomfortable.”
The KO News staff will miss Nika as she continues her education next year, studying history at University College London. Good luck Nika!
